Frequently Asked Questions

What is Pilates and how can it benefit me?

Pilates teaches you to support your body with efficiency and ease. It’s a full-body workout that strengthens your body from the inside-out.

Widely known as the safest and most effective way to strengthen muscles that support our spine, shoulders, hips and knees - dancers, athletes and therapists have been using the practice for years to improve performance and recover from injuries.  The focused exercises strengthen your core, tone muscles, elongate your spine, and increase flexibility where you need it most.

Pilates can also improve your alignment, posture, stability and body awareness. Use it for injury prevention or to safely recover from any injury.

Joseph Pilates developed his work in the 1920’s by combining his knowledge of anatomy and body mechanics with his expertise in diving, gymnastics, martial arts, skiing and boxing.

What’s the difference between a Pilates Mat class and Pilates on equipment?

Mat Classes include the fundamental exercises of the Pilates method. They utilize the body's own weight against gravity in all positions. These exercises can be practiced at home, when you travel or in a group class.

Pilates on Equipment is taught in Privates, Duets and Group Equipment Classes. The Pilates apparatus - Reformer, Cadillac and Wunda Chair - use springs for load and resistance. All Pilates exercises can be tailored to an individual's strength, flexibility, injury and condition.

What is GYROTONIC® and how can it benefit me?

The GYROTONIC® Expansion System is an innovative movement system that exercises all the joints, connective tissue and muscles of the body in all three dimensions.

It feels like “swimming in the air”. Movements originate in the spine and direct energy outward to strengthen and stretch all areas of the body.  Enjoy freedom in the rhythmic, flowing movements while improving coordination and balance for all athletic sports.

GYROTONIC® is the perfect complement to the linear movements of Pilates and Functional Fitness. Many professional athletes in golf, tennis, football, basketball, and dance have found it benefits their training.

What’s the difference between GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS®?

GYROTONIC® Exercises are performed on specialized equipment built with adjustable friction and weight resistance. Combining elements from Tai Chi, Yoga, gymnastics and swimming, it gives you a complete body workout with rhythm and flow that energizes the nervous system and increases overall wellness.

GYROKINESIS® is a form of the GYROTONIC® system performed without equipment in a group class. This class taps into the body's kinesthetic awareness and moves you through invigorating movement sequences. Initiating from the spine into spiraling movement through the entire body you will feel the heat as you work fluidly through a full body workout. Exercises are performed seated on low stools, on the floor, and standing.

How can Pilates, GYROTONIC® or Functional Fitness Training help my posture?

If you start with a Postural & Movement Assessment, we can design a program specific to your body and your needs. Our experienced trainers help make the difference. Even without an Assessment, they will keep an eye on your alignment and posture to assure that you effectively train your muscles to support your spine and joints. You will notice more ease in standing tall, opening your chest, relaxing your shoulders and neck, stabilizing your lower back and pelvis. And that will transfer to greater ease in all your daily movements.

How can I get results immediately?

Most people sense immediate changes from their very first session. You will likely feel taller, more lifted, lighter and more aware of your body. Keep in mind that to feel lasting changes that affect your posture and daily movements you need to continue practicing 2-3 times per week for several weeks or more.

How are private sessions unique? Are they worth the money?

Yes, private training in Pilates, GYROTONIC® and Functional Fitness are long-lasting investments in yourself. You will be retraining your body to move more efficiently, with ease, and gaining the strength and flexibility you need as you get older. The body awareness and good habits you find in the studio will carry over into your daily activities and stay with you long after your session.

How should I start? In Pilates, GYROTONIC® or Functional Fitness Training?

Your Postural & Movement Assessment will help you decide if one is more appropriate for your body first or if doing a combination would be best for you. Over time, as your needs and goals change, you can revisit this decision. All three styles of training complement each other and together they provide a well-balanced fitness program.

How many instructors should I see for my private sessions?

For most clients, it is a good idea to begin working consistently with one or two instructors until you have a good understanding of the exercises. Eventually we want you to have the confidence and body awareness to be comfortable switching instructors. You can see more than one instructor and even change instructors from one session to the next, and not interrupt your program because we will carefully track your progress. At the end of each session, your instructor makes detailed notes of the exercises and progress covered. At the start of your next session, your instructor will review those notes. Our instructors are highly skilled at providing you with continuity and continued progress.

^ Back to Frequently Asked Questions

How many times a week should I do it?

Pilates and GYROTONIC® are different from other exercise in that you can do them every day and benefit greatly. In fact, the more you practice, the more you will notice your progress. This is especially true at the beginning. We recommend taking two to three sessions a week. You will also benefit by adding a group class in once or twice a week to complement your private sessions.

^ Back to Frequently Asked Questions

How can I afford to come more than once a week?

Group classes are a great way to save money and be able to practice more frequently. We want all our clients to become independent and responsible for their personal training. Group classes are an important step in this direction. As you become proficient in Pilates and/or Gyrotonic, we offer Independents as an option to come in at your own time and work out unsupervised. If you like, we can also give you exercises and stretches to do at home that will keep you progressing and maintain continuity between sessions.

How should I dress?

Gym workout clothes or yoga clothing is most appropriate. We ask that you don’t wear clothing with zippers, belts or snaps that can tear the equipment and please wear socks. We have socks with and without grips for sale if you need them.
